“Becoming the Hero of Your Own Life Story” – Chip’s TEDx talk in Byron Bay

April 20 this year, I had the gift of participating in a TEDx speaking event in Byron Bay, Australia. For those who don’t know TED (www.ted.com), it’s a global platform for speakers, artists, scientists, athletes and pro-activists (to name a few), to share “Ideas Worth Spreading”. The basic rule of each talk is that it can last no longer than 18 minutes, and the aim is for each talk to focus around a specific idea of inspiration that is “worth spreading” – often because it could have a positive impact on the world. People ranging from U2′s Bono to fungi scientist (mycologist) Paul Stammets have graced the TED stage, and an extraordinary line-up came to Byron Bay for TEDx 2013, so it was a real honor to have the opportunity to contribute to the event.

The overall theme of the event was “Agents of Change”. The topic of my talk was “Becoming the Hero of Your Own Life Story”. The talks were just posted to YouTube. Here’s mine. ENJOY!

The Seed of Dreams

There’s a moment when a seed that has been geminating under the soil breaks the surface. It is a subtle moment, often unnoticed, but it is significant. It is a birthing. And while it may be months or even years before this seedling grows into full form, this is a moment of bold beginning, and it is here that we get our first tangible view of what this plant, tree or garden will one day become. It’s a powerful moment!

Summer is in full bloom here in Oregon and new life is literally EXPLODING into form in all directions – fruit trees, vegetable gardens, flowers of every imaginable color and the scent of fresh lavender  follows us just about everywhere we walk, sit or drive.  This rising, thriving expression of life calls us each to notice what seeds we have planted within our own soil that are now growing to fruition in the garden of our life?!  What seeds of great possibility have we perhaps been holding that are now ready to be given the chance to grow?
Whether you are in the heat of summer flare in the US or Europe, or in the reflective calm of winter in Aus/NZ,  join me for this week’s journey into a thriving organic garden and the sacred SEED OF DREAMS that is calling to each of us.  In the gentle breeze of summer’s great, natural “becoming”  is a whispered invitation to those parts of us that are ready to for full expression and fruition in the world. It is time!

The Opposite of Fear

By Chip Richards

We lived near a special beach a few years ago, where our daily rhythms were woven into the lives of a local pod of dolphins. Every day for about six months, they met us in the waves, and each day their behavior seemed to reflect our thoughts in profound ways, often revealing to us some deeper truth or lesson about life.

One day when I had something heavy weighing on my mind and was feeling fearful about a certain aspect of my life, I went out surfing to find some peace.  I caught a few waves and the pod arrived, so I followed them, paddling for about 20 minutes into the open blue. At first I felt much better (how could you not, hanging with these guys?), but eventually my thoughts circled back to fears about the problem I was having… and as soon as they did, the dolphins disappeared. Gone, as if on cue.

Glancing back to a thin strip of sand in the distance, I realized for the first time how far out to sea my so-called friends had brought me… way out!!!

Then suddenly I noticed something else… A large, dark shadow hovering underneath my surfboard. I held my breath. This was way bigger than a dolphin, and to my knowledge, could only mean one thing… my dolphin friends had brought me way out here to be eaten by a shark!  Every cell in my body recoiled, and I lay frozen on my board, waiting for the shadow beneath me to move… to circle… to chew me up and swallow.  But strangely, it just stayed there, hovering hauntingly just beneath, reflecting my fear in the highest.

Finally, after what seemed like minutes, I lost patience for death to find me, so I stuck my head under the water to see what was going on. There I saw an amazing thing… what I had thought to be a large, hungry shark, was actually a cluster of three dolphins gliding close in unison, right underneath me. The water had magnified and distorted their image, melding my most treasured allies into the vision of my greatest fear. And the amazing thing was that this all happened right at the very moment that I had been indulging my mind with fears and worries of my life. It was as though their external actions were simply reflecting my inner landscape…

What I discovered here in the water – and have found to be true in life ever since – is that when we trust enough to look beyond the surface of even our greatest fears, more often than not, we discover that the absolute opposite is true.

Consider an aspect of your life or your potential that brings up feelings of fear in you.  Something that causes you to freeze or lock down in some way in your life. Take some time to connect with what it is that you fear the most in that situation… then ask yourself, “What if the opposite were true?” What would the opposite of your worst fear look / feel like? Perhaps it is waiting there just below the surface, ready to guide you home.

Steps on the Story Path: How to Begin

By Chip Richards

For thousands of years many of our wisest and most enlightened cultures have used the creative arts as a pathway to share wisdom, to educate future generations, and in a very real way, to create the world they wished to experience. To let their stories, songs and visions become active forms of prayer. Inspiration anchored into earthly expression where it could grow and expand, deepen and spread like roots of a great tree. Music, dance, visual art, story. These and more have always been viewed as genuine agents of change and creation.

Amidst our very serious efforts to deal with environmental, economic and social challenges in the world, it is enlightening to consider that one of the greatest contributions that we can each make on an individual and collective level, is to find positive, energetically charged ways to create.

We each have a note or verse to sing out that is truly uniquely us and is delightfully required in order for the song and story of creation to be complete.

As we stand on the threshold of our own creative potential, this information can be a catalyst for both inspired action and petrified procrastination. How can we know what creative truth wants to come through us? What makes my idea or creative seed special or important to share? Maybe you know that you have an amazing idea swimming in your being, pulling at your soul to be shared, but you find yourself staring at the blank page, wondering where to begin. I would imagine that for every great story told, there are a thousand more that never reach the light of day beyond the doubtful doorway of their steward’s mind.

One of the very first moments of genuine connection that I shared with my wife Asheyana – one late, late night in the mountains of Victoria – was staring together at a blank canvas, sharing the simultaneous conflict of invitation and intimidation that often comes in the early moments of creative endeavor. As a result, early in our relationship we began creating paintings together by simply taking turns making seemingly random marks on the page until a picture began to form, which we would then follow to colorful completion.

In the past ten years I’ve spent much of my creative time in the writing space and have come up against many of those early phase moments in storytelling or screenwriting when the pressure of a project seems to weigh extra-heavy on those first few words. Amidst this journey, what I have learned is that often the more we want to write or create something of importance, the more pressure we put on ourselves, which in turn restricts our creative flow to the point that what emerges feels stifled and forced. Simultaneously, I have also realized that when our agenda is simply to explore raw creative energy on the page (as we might in our journal), often truly profound expressions come through.

So the question is, how can we have both? How can we effectively channel our creative voice in the direction of meaningful expression, but do so in a natural and free flowing way, so that it feels effortless and truly expressive of our true essence?

Today I will offer a simple exercise that has been a fun and potent doorway for many emerging writers and creative beings to do just that.

This exercise is one that I often share early in workshops as a way of helping different people with varying creative intentions move onto the page with a real sense of connection. It is a very simple exercise, and like many of life’s truest gifts, it never ceases to amaze me how powerfully revealing it is of two things:

1.) We each have a truly unique perspective and way of expressing our creative voice.
2.) Even a very simple exercise can become a powerful doorway for our higher self to come through.

It’s called the “5-Word Experiment” and here’s how it works. I will give you five random words and 5-10 minutes to write a simple story, poem or descriptive moment that incorporates all five words. We can sit for hours (or years), wondering how best to start a story, but if we give our conscious mind a simple task like the 5-Word Experiment, it opens the door for our subconscious to naturally rise up and show us where it wants to go.

Are you ready? OK. The five words for today are: breath, imagine, free, belong, fly.

Take a few moments to reflect on these words, and then begin to write whatever comes. Give yourself 5-10 minutes max, to write whatever you see, incorporating each of the words in whatever order or tense you choose. If you get stuck, just take a breath and ask what next? Then follow what comes. No right or wrong, just you opening the path for your creative voice to come through and express. Enjoy.

The second and most powerful part of this exercise is to share what you have written and to see how unique and different it is from everyone else who experiences the assignment. It always, always, always blows my mind to see how unique each person’s expression is, and how even the most resistant writers spring forth with prose and verse that give you chills. So, if you are feeling called to a greater expression of your own creative potential, I invite you to stop what you are doing right now, take five minutes to explore this exercise, then share what emerges in the comments section below.

I did this exercise (with these same words) a few weeks ago with a group. As always I was inspired beyond words by what emerged from the different individuals. Below is what came out for me (which was also a surprise at the time):

“Is this truly what I must do to be free?” thought the young brave, staring out from the cliff top to the grassy knoll way beneath. It seemed a very long way to drop. He had seen this done before many times. He had imagined this moment himself many times. But to be here standing on the edge, wings of the bird tribe fastened to his arms, the elders chanting behind him… his family and grandfather waiting around the fire below. Is this really where he belonged? Maybe he could just turn back… What was he seeking anyway, in making this big leap? As if reading his mind, the Chief stepped up, with kind black eyes and said, “It’s not what you are seeking that is calling you. It is who you already are, that is waiting to greet you as you fly.” With that, the young brave took a breath and stepped out into the sky.”

Enjoy where your own 5-Word Experiment leads you (and really let it lead you!), and we’ll see you on the path of story – as we each find our unique ways to express our note in the great creation song and story of life.

Please feel free to send me your expression!

How to Find the Heart of Your STORY

by Chip Richards

When we watch, read or listen to a truthful STORY we have a genuine experience that goes way beyond the simple sharing of information. If it’s a good story, it takes us from our head into our heart and into the heart of our own life experience.  We leave feeling changed, expanded, with new perspectives on ourselves, our relationships and our role life itself.

STORY is our way of communicating a message, honoring what has been and capturing the dreams of what may be…

We each carry stories within that tap us into the deeper truths & possibilities of life…

NOW more than ever IS THE TIME to bring these stories into form – in film, literature and beyond.

The following is a short video piece from the 6-week “Writing the Story Within” mentorship program that I run a few times each year. If you have a story that you know would make a great film or book… step inside and take a moment to find the HEART CENTER of YOUR STORY.

How to Cultivate an Inspired VISION

by Chip Richards

One of the greatest challenges that undermines the path of many people of all walks of life (including many “high achievers”) is a tendency to genuinely, chronically limit our experience by the limits we place on our own perception of what is possible.

We all know the feeling of having a bold, bright, inspired dream or vision. It feels amazing. It makes us feel alive and it gives of a glimpse of some spark of true potential. The challenge is that in our modern world we have been hard core conditioned to baseline our goals and visions on what is realistic, what has already been done successfully, what can be achieved without pushing the boundaries of risk too much… If one of those truly inspired gems of true possibility happens to squeeze through in moment of to squeeze through in a moment of road trip hypnosis or later night meanderings, often shortly after the spark is lit, there is a tendency for us (or those around us) to begin rationalizing, analyzing, “realitic-alyizing”.

What I have come to realize more than anything after decades of genuine dream pursuit and exploration within my own life and all those I work with, coach, write for and live with… The 9.9 times out of 10, the greatest risk is not going for the dream or believing in the seeming impossible enough to live it. The greatest risk is setting our sites too low, and therefore 1.) Censoring and limiting our overall energy around a given area of life (when we lower our visions our energy tends to come down with it, making us more susceptible to other dangerously contagious mental sand pits), and 2.) Never finding out what was truly possible in a moment. What was truly right there actually waiting for us to realize (as my dad used to say on the putting green, “100% of the putts that don’t reach the hole, don’t go in.”

More often than not, the biggest challenge is not achieving what we set out for (one way or another, we will almost always get what we ask for in the end)… The biggest challenge in my view is to continually bust the roof off of what we perceive to be possible and what we perceive ourselves to be worthy of.

I invite you to climb inside this short video session and an amazing experience and lesson I learned during two consecutive days at a special surf beach in the South Island of New Zealand. This one simple experience taught me more about the power of cultivating and believing in our very highest visions than any book or workshop ever could – further testament to the incredible gift of LIFE as our teacher when our eyes are open to see what’s really gong on.

This story was a popular piece in Week 2 of this year’s Moving Mountains journey. To me it really captures a quintessential truth about How to Cultivate (and Fulfill) an Inspired Vision.  Enjoy.

How to Make (and Eat) KALE

by Chip Richards

Here’s one of the more popular videos from Week 1 of the 2011 Moving Mountains journey (www.iammovingmountains.com) – sharing a revolutionarily nutritious and deliciously enhanced way to prepare and eat one of nature’s true green super foods.

This recipe was shared with me by a dear friend who discovered it while recovering from a major liver illness. He believes this preparation of Kale saved his life. Try it and you will be amazed not only by how genuinely great it tastes (even my 11 year old son Josh loved until we started giving it to him 3 x a day :) )and how directly it translates into positive, useable energy in your body.

Kale will quickly escalate from that vegetable that is difficult to chew and often used as a color-background in display windows of the local deli, into its rightful place of honor in you garden, on your plate… and in your body as pure life force ENERGY. Better than oranges at halftime of the soccer game. Better than Redbull… it’s Kale. Dig in and you may find your whole world transformed.

I have. Enjoy.
